Review of the Weasel Challenge 2018: IoT-Initiative of the Flexus AG

Already some months ago the Flexus AG started an IoT initiative to the current topic area of the Internet of Things.

In the context of this initiative and in cooperation with the company SSI Schäfer Automation GmbH a project with students of the University of Applied Sciences Würzburg Schweinfurt (FHWS) was realized.

The students from the departments of computer science and business informatics should develop a mobile app based on the SAP Fiori technology and the app framework of the Flexus Intralogistics Suite. With this app a driverless transport system, the so-called WEASEL® of the company SSI Schäfer Automation GmbH, should be controlled and supplied with driving jobs. The students were supported by experienced SAP consultants and developers from Flexus.

On Friday, the 06.07.2018, the results of the cooperation were presented in the context of the WEASEL®-Challenge at the FHWS. Here the students competed in two teams against each other and presented the functionality of their mobile app to the present guests. The team that was able to acknowledge different driving jobs fastest was the winner after three rounds.

In the end, the tight final result of only 4 seconds difference showed that both teams were acting on the same level and that the app with its different functions could be used in a real environment. Because as the responsible persons of Flexus AG, one of the market leaders for the connection and control of driverless transport systems to SAP®, confirm, the control of driverless transport systems gains more and more importance. More and more customers of the SAP partner in Würzburg already rely on the autonomous vehicles in the intralogistics in the meantime. Thus, the practical relevance of this joint project is of great importance and the students have gained an insight into a future-oriented technology which they can also use sensibly in their future working life.
