FAQ

Do you have any questions? We have the answer!

What is SAP EWM?

SAP EWM (Extended Warehouse Management) is the comprehensive, standardised warehouse management system with which you can optimise all processes in your warehouse and make them more efficient.

As an important component of supply chain management, EWM helps you to manage, process and monitor goods movements. Extended Warehouse Management is the successor to SAP Warehouse Management (WM) and offers precisely the extended modules and functions that enable automated control of your complex warehouse processes in all areas.

Are you facing major challenges in optimising your warehouse management, increasingly complex intralogistics processes (e.g. due to a growing variety of items and an increasing number of orders) and increasing demands on your resource management (e.g. due to fluctuating requirements)? Are you reaching your limits with SAP WM and looking for comprehensive software to make your operational processes more effective and efficient? Then SAP EWM is the right choice for you.

Extended Warehouse Management is particularly suitable for companies that have to manage many goods movements and transactions, for example in the retail, automotive, manufacturing or food industries. With EWM, you can perfect your warehouse processes, improve transparency and control over your supply chains and thus increase your competitiveness while reducing costs at the same time.

The core functions of Extended Warehouse Management include

  1. Storage management: Avoid incorrect goods placements and unnecessary transports between storage bins. Storage bin management in SAP EWM maps the entire warehouse structure and enables effective control of storage bin allocations and availabilities as well as comprehensive management of inventory data in your existing SAP system.

  2. Goods movements: Recognise the gaps and inefficiencies in your current processes. The movement of goods in SAP EWM is perfectly automated and allows your company to control outbound and inbound deliveries with pinpoint accuracy. You can process goods movements, optimise warehouse capacities and thus adapt your material flows individually and, above all, just-in-time.

  3. Stocktaking: Who hasn’t experienced this? Stocktaking is always time-consuming and error-prone. It doesn’t have to be. SAP Extended Warehouse Management offers your company the most effective way of accurately recording and monitoring your stock levels, using automated technologies to reduce errors and maximise the speed of inventory processes.

  4. Control, planning and monitoring: Nightmares at the thought of comprehensive warehouse control? With Extended Warehouse Management, you can sleep soundly. SAP EWM offers an integrated interface to external storage and retrieval systems for comprehensive control of your warehouse. In addition, the integrated material flow system (MFS) enables fully automated warehouse control. By planning and monitoring all stock levels, you can react quickly to changes in your warehouse stock or your order situation.

  5. Radio data link: Avoid delays or errors in your warehouse processes due to data transmission problems. The RF (radio frequency) connection from EWM enables efficient control of individual work steps for your warehouse employees. With the radio data link, you can optimise your warehouse processes and react to changes in real time.

Extended Warehouse Management offers your company a wide range of benefits thanks to its numerous functions. We have put together a selection for you:

1. extensive functionalities for every type of warehouse

Are you looking for THE solution for your specific warehouse type? Whether high-bay warehouse, block warehouse, chaotic warehouse or hazardous goods warehouse – SAP EWM offers your company the flexibility to adapt your warehouse management to different warehouse types. This makes it possible for your company to customise your warehouse management precisely to your specific requirements.

2. improved stock accuracy and transparency of goods movements

Has it become difficult for your company to keep track of where your stock is in the warehouse? With inventory tracking, you can track your stock in real time! Every movement of goods, be it goods receipt, putaway, picking or despatch, is immediately recorded in the system. In addition, SAP EWM offers automatic stock update functions when goods are moved or transaction-related warehouse activities are carried out. This ensures that the quantities of goods are always up to date and manual interventions are minimised. Another advantage of SAP EWM compared to SAP WM is that EWM offers the option of controlling the storage/retrieval and transfer of goods via specific transfer points or packing stations, for example. The stock can also be posted not only to storage bins, but also to resources such as forklifts or work centres. This provides increased transparency about the location of your stock.

3. efficient order processing and adherence to deadlines

Do you want your order processing to run smoothly? Realise your dream and increase your efficiency, improve delivery accuracy and satisfy your customers. With functions such as resource and capacity planning, integrated order processing, delivery date monitoring and optimisation of your picking processes: SAP EWM offers you all the functions you need to record, manage and monitor orders, supporting you throughout the entire order fulfilment process.

4. integrated solution for SAP ERP and S/4HANA

Maintain an overview of your logistics processes and inventories thanks to the seamless integration of SAP ERP and S/4HANA! SAP EWM uses the master data from SAP ERP and SAP S/4HANA to support the warehouse management functions. Item master data, customer data, supplier data and other relevant master data are synchronised between the systems to ensure a consistent database. This enables accurate recording of warehouse processes and a standardised information basis for all modules involved. This integration enables smooth data exchange between the different modules and systems, avoiding data inconsistencies, optimising the flow of information and improving the efficiency of overall operational processes – from accurate stock tracking, including stock receipt, stock reconciliation and bin management to stock tracking.

5. enhancement options for the SAP standard

Are you looking for a flexible and future-proof solution that meets the individual requirements and needs of your company? SAP EWM offers the option of creating customised workflows to map specific business processes. Expand your warehouse management with proven Flexus solutions, functionalities and integration options!

6. processing of high transaction volumes

Manage high transaction volumes in your warehouse management and avoid bottlenecks! SAP EWM has various performance optimisation mechanisms to speed up the processing of large volumes of transactions. These include techniques such as database indexes, caching, buffering and parallel processing. This enables the SAP EWM system to process a large number of transactions simultaneously without compromising performance or stability. As a result, companies faced with a high volume of goods movements and warehouse activities can handle their processes smoothly and without delays.

7. paperless, mobile order processing

Are you struggling with challenges such as manual data transfers, inefficient information flow, increased risk of errors and delays and a lack of real-time visibility? SAP EWM puts an end to this! Instead of using paper documents, your employees can view and update digital order documents in EWM. This includes information such as order details, article numbers, quantities, priorities, storage location information and much more. Digital order documentation reduces paper consumption, minimises errors caused by manual data entry and improves the efficiency of order processing. Benefit from paperless, mobile order processing that allows you to process orders efficiently and flexibly without having to rely on physical documents!

8. real-time monitoring and analysis of warehouse processes

Do you have no precise overview of your stock and warehouse activities? Real-time monitoring and detailed analyses of your warehouse processes enable you to react quickly to changes and identify bottlenecks! The system continuously records data on stock levels, goods receipts, goods issues, picking processes, transport and other relevant activities. This data is updated in real time and is available for monitoring. This allows you to maximise efficiency and ensure flexibility in your warehouse management. SAP EWM also offers the option of setting up customised notifications and alerts. This allows problems to be recognised and resolved at an early stage.

Warehouse Management (WM) and Extended Warehouse Management (EWM) are warehouse management systems from SAP. Although the two systems are similar in principle, they differ in terms of scope, functions and system architecture.

Warehouse Management was developed in particular for the management of simple warehouses with basic functions such as storage, retrieval and inventory management. This functionality will continue to be supported by Stock Room Management with the integration into S/4HANA. However, support will be discontinued on 31 December 2027. If you currently use SAP WM in your company, you should therefore consider switching to Extended Warehouse Management.

Extended Warehouse Management is the strategic successor to WM. Compared to its predecessor, SAP EWM is an independent system with a far greater range of functions – for you, this means more options for mapping your own processes in the standard system. With Extended Warehouse Management, you can not only manage complex warehouse processes, but also integrate other SAP SCM (Supply Chain Management) products such as Yard Logistics. EWM also enables the handling of complex cross-docking processes and the customisation of individual packing and shipping logistics as well as seamless integration into SAP ERP and SAP S/4HANA for warehouses of all sizes and requirements.
