When we first got started, one thing in particular surprised us: just how broad the approach is. At first glance, LGM looks like a new warehouse solution. In fact, SAP is bringing together warehouse and transportation processes on a single cloud platform.
For us, that’s the most interesting feature: the boundaries between warehousing and transportation are becoming more permeable. However, this does not make LGM a blanket replacement for EWM or TM.

When is SAP LGM a good choice?
LGM is particularly useful when companies want to integrate smaller or less complex locations into their SAP cloud strategy. Typical scenarios include decentralized locations or satellite warehouses where the full range of EWM functions is not required.
This distinction is also important in the transportation sector. LGM offers basic transportation functions. If the focus is on complex transportation planning, scheduling, freight orders, carrier selection, competitive bidding, or detailed transportation monitoring, SAP TM is the specialized solution.
Which is the better choice: SAP EWM or SAP TM?
Depending on the location, the solutions can also work together effectively.
Stock Room Management and Traditional Warehouse Management
From Stock Room Management to LGM? No one-click migration.
Anyone currently using Stock Room Management or traditional WM processes should not view LGM as a purely technical migration. First, processes, master data, integrations, organizational structures, and the target architecture must be evaluated.

LGM is based on SAP BTP. This brings cloud services and integration components into play: integration, identity, mobile services, and other BTP services.
In our experience, this is precisely the key point. Those who are already familiar with BTP have a clear advantage. For traditional ERP environments, the additional architectural and integration complexities initially involve a learning curve.

SAP Logistics Management offers a modern, standardized cloud-based approach. However, not every location, process, or user operates according to the same model.

And what about AI?
AI and Joule are on the LGM roadmap. From our perspective, however, the foundation must be right first: clean processes, stable integrations, and reliable master data. Only then can AI deliver real added value.
What did we learn from our tests?
The biggest challenge was understanding the entire landscape. Complexity arises not so much from individual functions as from the interfaces between ERP, BTP, integration, permissions, master data, the warehouse, and transportation. Our most important insight, therefore, is this: New technology is no substitute for solid project work.
What does the future hold?
We expect SAP LGM to continue expanding its feature set. Therefore, there’s no need for anyone to go live right away. It makes sense to start examining your own processes and potential use cases early on. As more projects go live, the role of LGM will become even clearer.

SAP LGM offers interesting opportunities for companies that want to further develop their SAP logistics landscape with a focus on the cloud. It is not a universal replacement for EWM or TM.
